Sustain- ability built in

From the drawing board to the spaces our uBomas become, we’ve looked at how we can reduce, reuse and recycle at every step. Influencing everything, from the materials we’ve chosen to the renewable systems they support.

Each structure is designed to minimise environmental impact, extend lifespan and strengthen communities over time. Because sustainability is environmental, economic and social.

Materials that last.
And last

Our uBomas are constructed from UV-stabilised high-density polyethylene, designed to last for up to 45 years. And can be recycled at the end of use, contributing to 30% to 50% recycled plastic content of new uBomas. Making sure we reduce waste and support reuse.

The colour variation of the uBomas reflect the level of recycled content, making sustainability visible in the structure itself.

Harnessing the strength of the South African sun

uBoma roofs are designed to integrate our optional solar systems, each capturing up to 7kWh of power a day. Easily supporting lighting, refrigeration, charging and other essential services.

Power storage is modular and expandable, allowing each uBoma to meet the needs of the community function it supports.

Harvesting every drop

The integrated perimeter gutter system means each drop of rainfall can be collected and stored for use – either at the uBoma or directed to larger storage facilities. Helping communities address water scarcity.

Not wasting a drop

Grey water handling solutions can be shaped to community needs – supporting reuse for toilet flushing or irrigation of community gardens and crops.

Turning waste into Watts

uBomi is developing sanitation-to-energy systems that use biodigestion technologies to convert waste into fuel.

Extending sustainability beyond buildings

We are equally committed to helping build sustainable communities and a sustainable South Africa.

We’ve partnered with local manufacturers who source local plastics to be part of our uBomas, reducing the impact of plastic waste and supporting the local economy.

By providing safe, sustainable and dignified spaces for healing, learning, shelter, enterprise and more, we hope to ignite possibilities, inspire agency and help communities thrive.
